The idea of wearing a fragrance for your own pleasure is literally inconceivable to so many. There are people, I am learning, who stopped maturing in middle and high school when life was about what everyone else thought of you. Your worth depended on your reputation and the impressions you made. In that system, you do things only to get others to think well of you. Every personal decision has to take the social consequences into consideration. Nothing is done without consultation and careful weighing of feedback. One’s clothing, vehicle and dietary choices must be to some extent focus-grouped.
You wear a cologne and these people are going to think you care more about opinions than you do. You might think that it is always a good thing to be regarded as the guy who smells good rather the guy who smells like a nursing home. You might think that, but some of these folks have spent their whole lives in the nursing home stink and it has a positive associations for them. I’m not making that up.
In general things that smell good do not disgust and I believe that it is considerate to not disgust those around you, but being considerate is not the same thing as desiring approval. Empathy is different from desiring approval but people who lack empathy might not know that.
The main reason to wear a fragrance is for the benefit of the person who has to smell it the most — the wearer. You do it because you like things that smell good.
